Cavalier fight to draw with Waterhouse ahead of tough Inter Miami outing
WATERHOUSE BATTLED to a 1-1 draw with Cavalier in their Jamaica Premier League (JPL) match at Drewsland yesterday to move one point ahead of Racing in the standings as the race for the top six intensifies.
Javane Bryan fired the home team into the lead early in the second half. But Jalmaro Calvin’s 69th-minute effort denied the Drewsland-based team all three points.
Nevertheless, coach Marcel Gayle thought it was a positive result and performance.
“It was a good effort from my guys. I thought we were good tactically. We were good for most parts. I just think we lacked concentration. It is something we are working on in training and will get better.
“It was a tough outing for the guys, but I thought they equipped themselves well,” he said.
Both teams went at it in the first half and had chances to score, but it was the hosts who broke the deadlock when Bryan collected a pass from Omani Leacock, turned his marker and fired a low shot past Vino Barclett in goal.
However, Cavalier were always dangerous in transition, and moments later, Shaquille Stein showed good skills to make space for himself on top of the area, but Akeem Bernard went full stretch to deny his low shot.
Jalmaro Calvin got the equaliser for Cavalier when he turned home a freekick from eight yards.
Cavalier took charge afterwards and had some threatening moments, but Waterhouse held out and even had moments they failed to make use of themselves.
Cavalier Rudolph Speid said it was a good point for his team under their current circumstances.
“Waterhouse fought well. We had to start some other players because we wanted to give players a rest. But I thought Cavalier did well to come back and should have won the game. But maybe our mind is somewhere else. So we are grateful we got a point,” he said.
Cavalier are fourth with 45 points and Waterhouse sixth with 38.
