Cornwall face tough battle to reach daCosta semis

MANY-TIME champions Cornwall College enter today’s ISSA daCosta Cup quarterfinal clash with everything to prove, when they brace for a battle against perennial giants Glenmuir High at Cornwall’s playing field at 3 p.m.

With their season hanging by a thread, Cornwall will have to fight to keep their title hopes alive in a must-win situation against an already qualified Glenmuir.

Considered today as underdogs despite their rich history, the Hector Wright-coached Cornwall must deliver their best performance of the season to take them over the line.

Cornwall are looking to shake off the sting of being humbled by giant killers Kemps Hill High with a 3-1 loss on Wednesday in Clarendon. The hopes of getting a shot at advancing to the semifinals rest on them registering a win and an eliminated McGrath High defeating Kemps Hill.

Meanwhile, over in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) will host a Lenny Hyde-led Dinthill Technical squad that has quietly but confidently worked its way back into championship contention.

The high-flying Group B leaders STETHS outclassed Christiana High on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory at Manchester High’s playing field.

According to Omar ‘Rambo’ Wedderburn, coach of STETHS, the job is not done.

“We can’t be comfortable because we have to still continue playing for the championship. The aim as usual is to be ready, remain focused and execute our game plan,” said Wedderburn.

For STETHS, they will not only look to book their spot in the semifinals but also cement themselves as Group winners.

As for Dinthill who are having an impressive season, they will come in today’s game reminding football lovers they are no pushovers.

On Wednesday, Dinthill clipped Clarendon College 2-1, to push themselves closer to qualifying for the semifinals.

Hyde told The Gleaner that the team is in good spirits and determined to secure a good result.

“We have good vibes and spirits. We are looking forward to the encounter with STETHS. It’s not over yet,” said Hyde.

“We have to go down there (STETHS) and get a good result. The guys are ready to go,” added Hyde.

Both STETHS and Dinthill are tied on four points, with the former ahead on goal difference. A draw will be enough to send both teams to the semis ahead of Clarendon and Christiana who have a point each.
