Ride-sharing apps offer better and safer choice
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I am writing in response to the article on regulating, not banning, ride-sharing apps. As a passenger, I wholeheartedly agree with the author’s viewpoint. Having used public transportation for years, I recently switched to ride-sharing and now use it daily. While it can be more expensive, the convenience and comfort are well worth it.
My experience with public transportation was often negative. Drivers were frequently disrespectful and overloaded their vehicles beyond the legal capacity. I’ve also been a victim of body-shaming and witnessed passengers being squeezed into uncomfortable spaces. There were also times I was left waiting at a bus stop for extended periods until a driver is willing to carry the legal capacity and accommodate me. The final straw for me was being yelled at by a driver for simple things like adjusting a window. These experiences were insulting and embarrassing, and they led me to stop using public transport altogether.
Ride-sharing offers a much better experience. The trips are comfortable, and I can choose to engage with the driver or simply enjoy the ride. The music selection is better, and there is no body-shaming or overcrowding. I believe many others share my view, and this is why regulating these services, rather than banning them, is the right approach.
