T&T say farewell to Molino, Phillip
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):
THE HASELY Crawford Stadium last night provided the backdrop for the farewell of two pillars of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) football, captain Kevin Molino and goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, who retired from international duty.
The duo were taking part in T&T’s final FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Bermuda, donning the red, white, and black, bringing the curtain down on distinguished careers that have spanned over 15 years.
Molino, the 35-year-old midfield maestro, confirmed his decision after T&T’s qualifier against Jamaica on November 13.
“Looking back, it has been a hell of a road,” Molino told Trinidad and Tobago Football Association media.
“I think it’s set up in a way that this might be my last game for TT coming up Tuesday.”
His sentiment was echoed by national coach Dwight Yorke, who paid a heartfelt tribute to both players ahead of the Bermuda clash.
“I have watched Kevin Molino over the years as a player, and I admire him dearly.”
He revealed that he had even hoped that Molino would lead the squad at a future World Cup just as Yorke himself did in Germany 2006. The coach described Molino as “exceptional”, praising his positive attitude even when not in the starting line-up.
Yorke also ensured that veteran goalkeeper Marvin Phillip, 41, who debuted in 2007, received his due recognition.
The celebratory evening was also slated to honour Joevin Jones, who recently earned 100 international caps. Jones was not in the squad for last night’s game.
