Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security, Dr Horace Chang, says Montego Bay is entering a transformative era of sustained growth and stability, thanks to substantial investments by both the private sector and the government.

“The investments in the country have come into Montego Bay and have laid the foundation for the kind of growth we aspire to,” Dr Chang said, while speaking at the Montego Bay Free Zone’s 40th Anniversary Client Awards Ceremony recently.

According to the minister, the St James city is rapidly evolving into a hub for business activities, driven by the expansion of hotel accommodations by international investors, major developments in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector, and several government-led infrastructure projects. These developments, he said, are contributing to improved living standards for residents.

He commended local investors for their vital role in Montego Bay’s progress and highlighted key infrastructure initiatives such as the soon-to-be-completed Montego Bay Perimeter Road and the US$400 million expansion of the Donald Sangster International Airport.

“These projects are well underway, including upgrades to roads and bridges, which are aimed at enhancing both the quality of life and accessibility in Montego Bay,” he said. “All these combined create the foundation for continued growth and development.”

Chang, who is also the Member of Parliament for St James North West, emphasised the BPO sector’s role in generating employment, particularly for young people.

Reflecting on the 40-year legacy of the Montego Bay Free Zone, he expressed confidence in its future and the next generation of innovators.

“Forty years from now, I won’t be here, but someone will be here commending the young entrepreneurs who will still be driving new ideas and setting the pace for the kind of development this country needs to become a prosperous, healthy, and dynamic society,” he said.
