JAS urge farmers to register
The Jamaica Agriculture Society (JAS) said it would be intensifying its efforts to get more farmers to register with the organisation.
According to the JAS President, Senator Norman Grant, this is part of the plan to further promote the receipt book system. He said many farmers have not been buying the receipt books.
The system was implemented more than two years ago to help address the growing concerns of praedial larceny.
Under the law, a person caught transporting produce without a receipt and who cannot prove the origin of the items can be fined or jailed.
Senator Grant is claiming that stolen produce worth million of dollars could have been saved, if more farmers were participating in the receipt book programme.
He said the JAS would be intensifying its campaign to educate farmers on some of the benefits from the programme.
