The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing the fatal shooting of a construction worker during an alleged confrontation with the police in Annotto Bay, St Mary, on Monday night.

The deceased has been identified as 37-year-old Nickel DeSouza, otherwise called ‘Odane’.

According to a police report, at about 9:18 p.m., a team of officers was on patrol along the Annotto Bay main road when they observed a man behaving in a manner they deemed suspicious.

The police reportedly engaged the man, who allegedly produced a firearm and pointed it in the direction of the officers.

One of the policemen responded by discharging his service weapon, and the man was shot.

DeSouza was taken to the Annotto Bay Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The police say a black-and-silver single-action 9mm pistol, with a magazine affixed containing 12 rounds of 9mm ammunition, was recovered at the scene.
