The Portmore Municipal Corporation plans to intensify efforts to curb illegal construction by homeowners, particularly within gated communities.

At the May meeting of the corporation's Physical Planning, Environment, Development, and Climate Change Committee, it was revealed that building violations are on the rise — with the gated community of Phoenix Park Village alone accounting for over 60 breaches.

It was emphasised that under the Building Act, no construction should be carried out without a building permit. Individuals who violate this requirement commit an offence and, upon conviction, are subject to penalties.

To date, more than 30 notices have been issued to offenders across the municipality.

Failure to comply may result in severe penalties — fines of $1,500,000 under Section 44(7) and $2,500,000 under Section 46(5) of the Act.

The corporation has pledged to take a stringent approach to enforcement.

Legal action will be pursued against non-compliant property owners, and, where necessary, unauthorised structures may be demolished following court rulings.

Residents are therefore urged to comply with the law.
