Letter of the Day | Mobile phones should be allowed in schools
THE EDITOR, Madam:
As a student, I believe that mobile phones should be allowed in schools when they are used responsibly and under clear rules. While it is true that phones can be distracting, completely banning them ignores the significant role technology plays in modern education.
Mobile phones can be effective learning tools. With permission from teachers, students can use their phones to research topics, access educational applications, use calculators, and view digital textbooks. These resources can make lessons more engaging and help students better understand the material being taught.
Mobile phones also improve safety and communication. In case of an emergency or unexpected situation, students can quickly contact their parents or guardians. Phones also allow schools to share essential information with students efficiently, which gives reassurance to both students and parents.
Further, allowing phones in schools helps students develop responsibility. Technology is a major part of everyday life, and students must learn how to manage it wisely. Teaching proper phone use in school prepares students for real-world situations where self-discipline is needed.
This does not mean that phones should be used freely during lessons. Clear rules should be enforced, such as limiting phone use for educational purposes or breaks. With proper guidance, mobile phones can support learning rather than disrupt it.
Mobile phones should be allowed in schools because they can enhance learning, improve communication, and help students develop responsibility when used correctly.
