Jamaica can’t take on Haiti’s problems

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I am writing with reference to the article by Dennis Minott in In Focus, Sunday Gleaner of December 28. It is a great article, but there are caveats.

Although there may be skilled labourers from Haiti, Jamaica has been dealing with gang violence for years. Many of these gangsters are part of the drug trade of which Haiti has a major role. Is Dr Minott seriously suggesting that Jamaica add more burden to itself? When Haitian migrants can find easy access to Jamaica, what do you think will happen if these people can just hop on a boat and get on the island?

I do not believe that Jamaica has the resources to take on the burden of Haitian migrants when people can’t feel safe in our homes due to the still very high crime rate. We must clean up our yard before taking on other countries’ problems.

Jamaica still has a far way to go.
