Five steps for building better character in new year

Published:Tuesday | January 1, 2019 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

As we step into the new year, I want to encourage Jamaicans to strive to be better individuals whose aim is to improve and hone themselves, their communities and, by extension, our "sweet, sweet Jamaica". It is conventional at the beginning of a new year, for persons to create New Year's resolutions; this has almost become cliche.

I no longer believe in creating New Year's resolutions, as I have realised that it is difficult to follow through with them, as it is almost as if I create them because 'everybody else does it'. So, instead of creating New Year's resolutions, I do some personal reflection. This helps me to strengthen various areas of my life (such as my spiritual, mental, physical and academic).

I would like to give the readers five pointers that have been helping me to improve holistically.

These five points, if consistently applied by you, the reader, I guarantee you that you will start to see some improvements in your character and daily activities.

1) Always put God first in everything you do.

2) Never give up, despite the situation.

3) Always remember that failure is not to destroy you, but exists to make you stronger and better.

4) Always strive to be the best version of yourself, and don't take life too seriously. Oh, and always smile - haters hate to see you smile.

5) Try to help someone in any way that you can. 'Help' could be in the form of finances, a smile or kind word, or even just a hug; it doesn't have to be big.

So why don't you just try to apply these to your life? I guarantee you that you wont regret it. Have a fulfilling, blessed and prosperous new year.
