UWI intellectuals have nothing better to do?

THE EDITOR, Sir:

Our intellectuals at or from the great University of the West Indies (UWI), who have had very little positive effect on the quality of life in our country, have once again come out in full force to create a new language out of our Patois.

Apart from being a very expensive proposition, it would be the biggest mistake we could ever make, and would only serve to fatten the pockets of a few underemployed linguists.

The proposal of the 'prappa prappa' version touted by Carolyn Cooper is no more than a cross between English and Patois, which itself is little more than broken English! Can you imagine the British proposing making an official language out of cockney?

Nothing demonstrates the folly of pursuing this idea more than the spelling of Jamaican as Jamiekan by Martin Henry in his Sunday Gleaner column! I have never heard anyone pronouncing Jamaica as 'Jamiekan'!

This country faces greater problems to which our intellectuals should apply their talents instead of wasting them on this absurd idea.
