Miss Jamaica Trade winners awarded trips, gifts
Prizes were a major highlight of the Miss Jamaica Trade competition, with winner Marguerita Ramirez set to receive an impressive package including a 14-day all-expenses-paid trip to Brazil, a six-week tour of nine countries, a month of free hairstyles, and a weekend for two at Verney House Hotel in Montego Bay. The runners-up were also rewarded, with second place earning a Miami trip via Pan Am along with beauty services and a coffee set table, while third prize included a weekend for two at the Jamaica Hilton Hotel and a radio, donated by Regal Furnishing Company.

‘Miss Jamaica Trade’ crowned
MARGUERITA RAMIREZ, 18-year-old daughter of Mr and Mrs M. E. Ramirez of 8 Brynmar Avenue, Kingston 18, wearing the sash of “Miss Watson’s Jewellery Store”, was crowned “Miss Jamaica Trade 1966–67” on Saturday night at a ball which was held at Curphey Place.
In second place was Sheila James, Miss St Elizabeth, wearing the “Miss Regal Furnishing Company” sash, and third, Beverley Jefferson, “Miss Jamaica Metals Limited”.
Miss Ramirez, who is an insurance clerk employed by Messrs Livingston of the firm Alexander and Levy, is 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighs 125 lbs, and has vital statistics of 36–25–37½. She won from a field of 12 contestants.
Miss James, who is a past student of Hampton High School, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Denzil James of Malvern, St Elizabeth. She is 5 feet 3½ inches tall, weighs 119 lbs, and has a 34–24–38 figure. She was very popular with the audience.
Miss Jefferson is a 20-year-old civil servant, and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs L. Jefferson, who are residing in England. She is 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighs 130 lbs, with measurements of 36–26–39.
“Miss Jamaica Trade” will receive as her first prize a trip to Brazil for 14 days, all expenses paid, donated by the Federal Housing and Development Corporation; a six-week tour to nine countries, donated by the International Goodwill Association; one month of hairstyles free by Rose Marie Henriques; and a weekend for two at Verney House Hotel, Montego Bay.
The second prize winner will receive a trip to Miami by Pan Am, donated by Martin’s Travel Service; one month of free hairstyles by Rose Marie Henriques; and a three-piece coffee set table, donated by Jamaica Metals Limited. The third prize is a weekend for two at the Jamaica Hilton Hotel and a radio, donated by Regal Furnishing Company.
Before the final judging, the 12 contestants paraded in evening gowns and then bathing suits. They were then judged on intelligence, knowledge of current affairs with emphasis on trade, beauty, deportment, personality and poise.
The panel of judges was Mrs Patricia McPherson (chairman), Dr Mavis Gilmour, Mrs E. James, Mrs Ferdie Martin and Mr Ian Coxe.
Emcee was Roy Reid. The winner and runners-up were presented with bouquets by Miss Yvonne Jones, and “Miss Jamaica Trade” was robed and crowned by Mr John Bradbury.
Following the crowning, a floor show was presented, featuring dancer Duke Diamond and singer Marcia Griffiths, the Dragonaires. Music was by Byron Lee, and the show was emceed by Yvonne Jones and Tony Verity.
