PM gifts book to US official
Prime Minister Michael Manley presented Miss Barbara Watson, assistant secretary of state and head of the US Bureau of Security and Consular Affairs, with a copy of his recently published book, The Politics of Change, during her courtesy call at the prime minister’s Devon Road office on January 18. Miss Watson was in Jamaica for the official opening of the new United States visa building on Eureka Road and also held wide-ranging discussions with the prime minister on international economic issues and Jamaica–United States relations.

Barbara Watson calls on PM
Barbara Watson, assistant secretary of state in the US State Department, yesterday morning paid a courtesy call on the prime minister at Jamaica House.
Miss Watson, who is a sub-cabinet officer, is one of the highest-ranking women in the United States Government. She heads the Bureau of Security and Consular Affairs.
She told the prime minister that she was impressed with the changes that have taken place in Kingston since she was last here in November 1970.
The prime minister and Miss Watson also discussed, in a general way, the world economy, with particular reference to high oil prices.
They also discussed various aspects of relations between Jamaica and the United States.
Watson came to Jamaica in connection with the official opening on Thursday of the new United States visa building on Eureka Road in Kingston.
Book
She was accompanied this morning by Ashley Hewitt, chargé d’affaires at the embassy.
The prime minister presented Miss Watson with a copy of his recently published book, The Politics of Change.
Also sitting in on the discussions were the permanent secretary in the prime minister’s office, Mr R. I. Mason, and the permanent Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr Gordon Wells.
