A heartfelt memoir

The True Story of the Purple Lady by Collett Parsons is a poignant and compelling memoir that explores her personal journey, shedding light on the triumphs, challenges, and encounters that helped her to become the woman that she is today.

Parsons’ story is a heartfelt one. Her first 18 years were spent on the harsh streets of Jamaica, in orphanages, and foster homes where event after tragic event not only led to abuse and ill treatment but also the violent deaths of her mother and brother. As she grew into adulthood, her life seemed to only get worse, but through it all, Parsons resolved to use her mother as her inspiration to get an education and become the best that she can be.

CAPTURING THE ESSENCE

Parsons’ writing is intimate, reflective, and empathetic, capturing the essence of The Purple Lady’s character. Although there is quite a bit of repetition in the story, which made it a bit confusing at times and prevented it from flowing smoothly is some areas, the novel’s strength lies in its ability to portray Parsons’ resilience and self-discovery as she found a life of purpose. Her life is a testament that anyone can rise above the horrors of their past and use them to create a meaningful future. As she puts it: “As diamonds are forged from extreme heat and pressure, I know that I have come out just like a diamond, refined and proven.”

Overall, Parsons’ story is a remarkable one. Every incident, every development, every encounter led to the purpose-driven person that seeks to inspire others with her story. Even the title of the book is aptly named as the colour purple is a defining factor of her personality. Not only was it the colour of the dress and casket her mother was buried in, but it also “symbolises strength, transformation, power and royalty.” Her wardrobe, her hair, even her car overflow with purple, reminding her of her ability to endure whatever life throws at her. She is and forever will be ‘The Purple Lady’.
