A cheerful home, a happy life. This could not be more true for Simone McCulloch. In December of 2021, Simone decided to branch out into the world of DIY home decoration. “I like ‘DIYing’ and doing it yourself projects ... . I love plants, so I started making macramés then I branched out into beaded garlands,” The Knottygirl told The Gleaner.

It all began when a friend of Simone told her that the items which she made as gifts for her and her friends, would have made an amazing business opportunity. “I used to make them for myself and as gifts for friends ... . A friend told me that I could sell them and then I saw it as a business opportunity.” McColloch stated. Ever since, Simone has been tirelessly making beautiful home decoration items. This includes beaded garlands, macramé plant hangers, personalised bottle tags and even small and large personalised signs for the home.

“I wanted to do something that would bring people joy in their surroundings. I like to have things in my own home that bring me joy and I wanted to impart that to other people,” the entrepreneur said. “My bestselling items would be the beaded garland and personalised tags,” she continued.

The business owner shared her tips on how to beautify your home space using any of the items that she sells in her business. “I personally have beaded garlands everywhere in my house. You can drape them on picture ledges, wrap it around furniture, on the handle of a chair or on a door,” she shared.

As for the personalised signs, the creator shared that the signs can be made for various parts of the home. “It all depends on the client, but I had a client who wanted a personalised sign for her coffee corner. It had her name on it ... . So, you can personalise it for you,” she said. “I also have more tips on how to style your beaded garlands on my Instagram page,” she added.

In light of Jamaica’s 60th celebration of independence, Simone created a Jamaican-themed garland that could be displayed decoratively anywhere in the home. The garland had the colours black, green, and gold, with the addition of a hummingbird.

For now, Simone wishes to continue to develop her brand and business, The Knottygirl876. “I am also working on incorporating more upcycled/recycled material in my pieces, as a way to divert single-use items from the waste stream. In this way, I can take something we would normally throw away and make something that adds value to our surroundings,” McColloch shared. She wishes to continue to spread joy through creating handmade home decorative pieces, so that people can beautify and enjoy their living spaces.
