Leader of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), Prime Minister Andrew Holness, has expressed confidence that the party will take the St Ann North Western constituency from the People’s National Party (PNP) in the next general election.

The PNP’s Dr Dayton Campbell has held the seat since 2011, but at a conference to introduce Ruel Reid, the JLP’s new representative in the constituency yesterday, Holness argued that it was one which the party should have won in general election in February 2016.

“There is no question about it.  I campaigned with many of you, spent several days going through and through and the message was clear, the people wanted the change,” Holness told cheering labourities.

“So by the parish council election (November 2016) the people had made up their minds fully and now we have all four parish council divisions,” added Holness.

Hinting that division among JLP supporters was to be blamed for the defeat the last time around, Holness said there is now a unified approach by labourities to win the seat.

“I believe that we have reached a point in this constituency where the people generally agree that we need this seat for the Jamaica Labour Party, that the Jamaica Labour Party is the best political organisation to lead the Government of Jamaica, that the Jamaica Labour Party is fulfilling its commitment to your prosperity and that it is in the country’s best interest that we should come together in full unity and give our support to a candidate who can lead this constituency into the victory column for the Jamaica Labour Party,” declared Holness.

Campbell defeated the JLP’s Othneil Lawrence by 861 votes in 2011 and held on to the seat by a reduced margin of 410 votes in 2016, again defeating Lawrence.
