Fire brigade to get funds for rescue equipment
Local Government minister Desmond McKenzie has announced that $30 million is to be released to the Jamaica Fire Brigade to boost its capacity to carry out rescues during inclement weather.
He made the announcement in parliament yesterday while addressing issues associated with the passage of Hurricane Irma.
McKenzie noted that Hurricane Irma has highlighted certain issues, such as the need to boost Jamaica’s capacity to respond to emergencies.
He further noted that in the past, the Fire Brigade has had challenges executing rescues.
McKenzie also informed that the government will be moving to put in place the regulations to effect mandatory evacuations under the Disaster Risk Act.
He says the regulations are almost ready.
