Furious at SportsMax monopoly on Winter Games

Published:Tuesday | February 13, 2018 | 12:00 AM

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The 2018 Winter Olympics is on in Pyeongchang, South Korea, where Jamaica is among the many countries participating, but most interested locals at home are shut out of viewing the Games.

Once again, subscriber cable channel SportsMax makes it impossible for the majority of Jamaicans interested in the events to see the Games. They have bought the broadcast rights and, in so doing, make the Games available only to their subscribers and unavailable to the many without the channel and/or subscription.

Consequently, islandwide cable channel FLOW blocks its regular showing of NBC, owner of the rights to broadcast in the USA, and CBLT, which airs the Games in Canada.

Therefore, subscribers of FLOW cable must double-subscribe to watch SportsMax. The Summer and Winter Olympic Games and World Cup football are global events parading athletes/players from individual countries, and Jamaican athletes are always on show. Why is a single entity standing in the way of most Jamaicans seeing the Games that are organised to foster goodwill among peoples and nations?

NBC and CBTL sold advertising spaces so that their constituents, Americans and Canadians, respectively, can watch the Games. Why can't SportsMax do the same?
